  • Each person generates approximately 4 1/2 lbs of trash each day = over 1,500 lbs per person, per year
  • As of 2000, approximately 37.4% of our landfills include paper, something very simple to recycle
  • Reuse items, such as plastic margarine tubs, medicine bottles, etc., for craft items such as buttons, beads, or paper clips
  • Over 1.5 million shoes lay idle in American closets
  • Give unwanted clothing, shoes, toys to local charities and shelters  (If it is filthy or falling apart, throw it away)

HELPFUL FACTS ABOUT IDENTITY THEFT:

  • Five Common Types of Identity Theft: Drivers License, Social Security, Medical, Character/Criminal, Financial
  • 48% of ID Theft has nothing to do with ‘credit’:  Only 28% of ID Theft is financial
  • Common Ways ID Theft Happens: going through your trash; stealing credit/debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card; scams on the internet or ‘phishing’; changing your address by filling out a ‘change of address’ form; old fashioned stealing-wallets, purses, junk mail, credit offers, etc.
  • Ways to Safeguard Your Information: shred sensitive documents before discarding them, protect your social security number by not carrying it in your wallet and only give it when absolutely necessary; NEVER click on links sent in unsolicited emails and make sure the site you are visiting is secure (https//); make sure you have anti-spyware and anti-virus software; stay away from obvious passwords, such as your pet’s name, mother’s maiden name or the last four digits in your social security number; keep your personal information in a secure place
